San Francisco used the third overall pick to draft Solomon Thomas, a defensive end who recorded 98 tackles, 12 quarterback sacks, and four forced fumbles in two seasons with Stanford University.

The 49ers added a second first-round pick later in the draft by dealing picks No. 34 and No. 111 to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for pick No. 31, which it used to further improve its defense with the selection of Reuben Foster. The recipient of the Dick Butkus Award in 2016 for the most outstanding linebacker in college football, Foster spent the past three seasons at the University of Alabama, where he compiled 211 tackles, 23 tackles for a loss, and seven quarterback sacks.
